# Migration from on-premise Vault to HCP (and back)

Hi,

we are currently evaluating Vault as our future secret management system and have a question regarding the possibilities to move from on-premise Vault to HCP and back.  
Is it somehow possible?  
We are currently not sure if we will deploy Vault on our own or if we will use HCP so we want to know if this is decision which can be changed “easily” in the future.  
I’ve checked [operator migrate - Command | Vault by HashiCorp](https://www.vaultproject.io/docs/commands/operator/migrate) but from the documentation it is not obvious that it could be used to do this.

The vault operator migrate command cannot be used to migrate between a self-managed Vault cluster and HCP Vault. Current considerations around migrating between self-managed and HCP Vault are detailed [here](https://cloud.hashicorp.com/docs/vault/migrate-to-hcp).
