Is there is a reason the provider has been abandoned and wasn’t progressed for production use?

Thank you for your question. The Terraform AD provider was archived, per our provider archiving process. It was always experimental and had not been worked on in several years.
The code repository and all commit history will still be available.
Existing released binaries will remain available on the releases site.
Issues and pull requests can no longer be created.
New releases will not be published.
If anyone from the community or an interested third party is willing to maintain it, they can fork the repository and publish it to the Terraform Registry.
